Dominion
By courtney | February 26, 2010
Remember when we went to visit our friends Nick and Julie a few weeks ago? We are thrilled to say that they announced the birth of their son yesterday! This is very exciting news, and while we have not seen pictures yet, we have no doubt that he is a most handsome and friendly little dude.
Speaking of visiting Nick and Julie: if you know Nick, you know that he is the Grand Master of German-Style Board Games. It’s not an official title — that I know of — but if it was, he would totally be the Grand Master. (Trust me.) Because of this, it is always a bit risky to visit them. Nick will inevitably introduce us to a new board game, hook us in, then leave us wishing that we could acquire for our own collection. (Lest you think I exaggerate, I refer to the instances of Colosseum and Pandemic.) And what happened on this last visit?
HE HOOKED US AGAIN.
We are clearly easy prey for this. But all the same, we have discovered the joy of Dominion. It’s a bit difficult to explain how this one works without having the game in front of us, but it’s basically a card game that plays like a German-style board game. The goal is to acquire as many lands (aka victory points) as you can, using various action cards and purchasing powers. Since there are many different types of action cards available and you can only play with 10, the game’s set-up is infinitely variable… which means that everytime we try a new set-up, I have the chance anew to beat Keith! (I still don’t, but hey, at least it’s a chance.)
Being so hooked on the game, Keith elected to spend his birthday money from Grandma Jan on buying our own copy. And wouldn’t you know… that game mysteriously disappeared to Keith’s office, where it is rumored to be regularly exploited every lunch break. (What a strange coincidence.) On the weekends, it treks home to our apartment for even more playing time.
Which just goes to show: if you are wondering what we are up to, and we aren’t currently cooking something, it’s usually a safe bet that we are trying to take over the world. Again.
