Cannery Pier Hotel
By courtney | May 3, 2009
The summer reading program is coming. This is my favorite part of my job: kids and teens everywhere all summer, a gazillion events going on, books being checked out by the truckload… it’s a blast! It’s also energy-intensive like you wouldn’t believe. With this in mind, I took a 4-day weekend to rest up ahead of time. For one of my evenings off, Keith took us both to Astoria, OR (near the mouth of the Columbia River) for a night away. Check it out!

This is the Cannery Pier Hotel, which is a restored cannery from Astoria’s glory days as a fishing town. You’re looking at the backside of the hotel. Every single room is on the front, facing the river. (That gorgeous bridge leads to Washington State on Hwy. 101.)

In fact, here’s the view from our room. We watched tankers and tugboats go by in the evening, outlined in their running lights.

Of course, it wasn’t all sitting in the room and watching boats. The hotel owns two restored 1930s Buicks, which take you anywhere in town. The one on the left took us to an Italian dinner. Al Capone would have approved.

A weekend away is nothing without a hot date. Here’s mine.
If we could ever recommend a fun place for a getaway (or a honeymoon!), the Cannery Pier Hotel is at the top of the list. Beautiful facilities, lovely location, great staff, an evening wine reception, and an excellent breakfast. And you get to pretend that you are a mobster for an evening. ( Well, maybe that’s just me.)
